Operational Readiness
Do you like surprises?
Commencing live operations in a new facility or on a new piece of airport infrastructure is definitely not the time for them!

Are you ready?
So your new terminal is built, the contractor has completed all system testing and commissioning, the facility is signed off as compliant and operational to manufacturer’s specifications and you have been handed control. You are ready to operate right?
Wrong.
It’s an unfortunate fact that pressures to meet capacity demands lead some airports to rush facilities into operation based on completion of construction, with little or no planning and allocation of time for thorough operational testing.
What can go wrong
Cancelled flights, lost bags and frustrated passengers are often the undesirable results of failed terminal openings. Even worse can be the disastrous results of runway incursions, GSE road accidents and personal injury to airside personnel when the opening of new airside infrastructure such as runways, taxiways, apron and stand areas doesn’t go quite as planned. A comprehensive operational readiness programme stops these undesirable outcomes from happening.
The human element
Ensuring facilities and systems are complete and operating to specification is important but is really only the starting point. Operational Readiness must also ensure that the human element – those who will actually operate the new systems and facilities, are ready. Do stakeholders have adequate staff resources, are recruitment processes on track, have staff been properly trained on new systems, are procedures written, available and understood by all staff?
Operational readiness trials
Familiarity with new facilities, and an understanding of the multiple interactions between stakeholders during full-scale operations is only achieved through progressive operational readiness trials which go beyond the testing of single process lines to include fully integrated facility operations testing and contingency planning.
